Fire crews had to rescue a driver of a bus in Gayton when it became stuck in flood watersSix people had to be rescued from their vehicles as heavy rain caused flooding across Staffordshire.
A bus was abandoned when it became stuck in Gayton, a pub and a school were closed in Stone and Uttoxeter Racecourse was flooded.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue service said it had dealt with 86 flood-related calls since 11:15 BST.
The Environment Agency (EA) has issued flood warnings for Marchington, Tean and Picknall Brook at Uttoxeter.
The EA said flood alerts were also in place for the River Churnet and Lower Dove brook.
Fire crews rescued a driver who had been trapped inside a bus in water that was 3ft (1m) deep in Wadden Lane in Gayton.
Sheep were also trapped by the floodwater there and crews managed to guide them to dry land.
Drivers in Stramshall, Marchington and Meaford climbed on to the roofs of their cars to be rescued as waters rose.
East Midlands Trains said it had suspended its service between Derby and Stoke-on-Trent due to flooding between Uttoxeter and Blythe Bridge.
‘Wading in wellies’
The car park and parts of the Star pub in Stone were flooded as the nearby Trent and Mersey canal overflowed.
St Michael’s CE First School in Stone had to close at lunchtime due to flooding.
Head teacher Mary Gale said: “The school building itself is safe, but around the school had formed a river and we’ve had to carry children over the river by wading out in our wellies and then parents have had to collect them.”
Uttoxeter Racecourse has been particularly affected by the heavy rain
David MacDonald, general manager at Uttoxeter Racecourse, said: “I’ve not known rain like this for some time, all the drains are overflowing and blocked.
“We’ve got lots of events planned for the weekend so we’re trying to see if we can possibly still hold them.”
A bride was also left stranded on the way to her wedding rehearsal in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
Caroline Griffiths is getting married at St Mary’s and All Saints church in Checkley, but she got stuck in nearby Tean due to heavy rain.
Her best friend Sandra Wainwright said: “We’ve got dresses and table displays for the reception in our cars, but the roads have been closed.
“I’m hoping that we can get through to the venue to see Caroline married.”
