A consortium of scientists led by the University of Stirling is attempting to create the world's first satellite-based global lake surveillance system.
The six universities and research institutes involved in the GloboLakes project have been awarded a £2.5m grant to develop the technology.

Twenty-nine persons have been reported killed in a horrendous motor accident at Daniski village, on the Potiskum–Kano road in Nengere Local Government Area of Yobe State.
According to a statement by CSP Frank E. Mba, the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer in Abuja, the accident resulted from a head-on collision of two Toyota Hiace buses travelling in opposite directions. In the ensuing fire, 11 of the 29 dead were burnt beyond recognition, and several people suffered various injuries.

An Indian court is due to sentence 32 people convicted for involvement in the 2002 religious riots in Gujarat state.
Among those convicted in the case, known as the Naroda Patiya massacre, are former minister Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi, a former leader of the militant Hindu group Bajrang Dal.

Central Bank’s Plans To Print New N5000 Notes Were Not Approved, Senator Says

In a telephone interview with SaharaReporters, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe revealed that the Nigerian Senate did not know or approve of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s plans to spend N40 billion to print and circulate N5000 bank notes.

“You cannot take a decision that affects the economy of the country without including the Parliament,” Abaribe said. “You cannot take such a momentous decision which affects the economy in very fundamental ways without reaching [out] to the Parliament.”

A brewery ownership scandal in Anambra state has stirred a conflict of interest concerns following allegations linking the governor, Peter Obi, to a stake in the new firm.
Mr. Obi is accused of fraudulently financing the purported government-owned company with state funds when indeed, his company has an interest in the group.
The company at the centre of the controversy, Intafact Beverages Limited, is one of the projects earmarked for commissioning by President Goodluck Jonathan who is visiting the south eastern state on Thursday.

A colourful line of pulsating balloons is to line the night sky across the 73 mile (117km) length of Hadrian's Wall.
The digital art installation will see 400 balloons lined from Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend, to Bowness-on-Solway, as part of the London 2012 Festival.

The Nato-led international force in Afghanistan says an Afghan in army uniform has killed three of its soldiers, the latest in a series of so-called "green-on-blue" attacks.
The attack took place in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday, Nato said, but it did not give the exact location nor the nationalities of those killed.
Some 45 coalition troops have died in more than 30 such attacks this year.

Gordon Dyche told the trial that after the crash it 'felt like the end of the world'

A garage attendant accused of causing a crash which killed four members of the same family has denied he took a reckless gamble.
Gordon Dyche, 24, from Powys, told Caernarfon Crown Court that he was driving safely in the seconds before the incident happened in April 2011.
But witnesses say he overtook a car, clipped it and send it careering into Llyn Clywedog near Llanidloes in Powys.

When police learned a suspected lion was on the loose in an Essex village, they brought in helicopters with thermal imaging kit and experts from a nearby zoo.

Ni water has made a profit of £133m this year.

Northern Ireland Water has made a profit of more than £133m this year, up from £112m in 2011.
The company paid less tax after the chancellor lowered the corporation tax level in April - that accounted for about £10m of the extra profit.
It also received more money this year from the Executive and from businesses to cover water costs.
Most of its money comes from public funding so the profit will be returned to the Regional Development department.

Multiple award winning TV journalist, and one of the nation’s most talented broadcast journalists, Deji Bademosi, has resigned his appointment with Channels Television over what sources described as “irreconcilable differences” with the Chairman of the station, John Momoh.
Mr. Bademosi, who was Head of the television’s Political Desk, tweeted on Friday that he had quit his position at the station.
“My time with Channels Television has now ended. Looking to new challenges,” Mr. Bademosi, a Mass Communication graduate from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, tweeted on Friday evening.
