Gore Vidal was said to have been ill for some time
Celebrated writer and political commentator Gore Vidal has died aged 86, according to US media.
Mr Vidal died at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening of complications from pneumonia, his nephew, Burr Steers, told AP.
A prolific writer, Mr Vidal produced 25 novels, including the best-selling Burr and Myra Breckenridge, more than 200 essays, and several plays.
He also ran for political office twice and was a well-known commentator.

The army has been involved in extra-judicial killings, torture and sexual abuse since staging a coup in March, it says, demanding an investigation.

A local council near Paris has suspended four sports instructors for observing the Ramadan fast while in charge of children at a summer camp.
One of the four called the decision "unacceptable" and said they were considering taking the matter to court.

A hot tub is the "probable" source of an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Staffordshire, health officials have said.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said investigations were taking place at JTF Warehouse in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, and the company was co-operating.
A statement from the firm said: "JTF is extremely concerned and the product has been withdrawn from all stores."
The HPA said there had been 18 cases in the outbreak. One patient has died.

Three people, including a police officer, are among the victims of the two suicide bomb blasts in Sokoto city this afternoon which was first reported by SaharaReporters.
The other two deaths are of the suicide bombers, one of whom drove into the Police building at Unguwar Rogo and was killed, and the other into the zonal offices of the Assistant Inspector General of Police at Marina.
Sources close to scene of the blasts said that the policeman was killed when he attempted to stop the suicide bomber who drove a Volkswagen Golf car

At first a suicide bomber driving a bomb rigged car attacked the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police in the city at Marina killing a police officer and injuring several others.

Residents of Kano and students of the Bayero University of Kano went scampering for safety late evening as several explosion rocked the university neighborhood.
A police source confirmed that several explosions were coming from the area, he attributed the attacks to Boko Haram militants. However, he stated that the police could not confirm if there were casualties as efforts were underway to stop the explosions.

Mali's interim President Dioncounda Traore has called for talks with militant Islamists who have captured the north.
He made the call in his first national address after returning last week following a two-month absence.
He had been recovering in Paris from injuries sustained when he was beaten by supporters of March's coup.
Tuareg rebels and Islamist militants capitalised on the chaos following the coup and took control of the north.
But their uneasy alliance has since collapsed.

A man has been charged after an MP was injured when he challenged a man vandalising a Peterborough bus shelter.
Conservative MP Stewart Jackson said he tried to make a citizen's arrest when he saw a man throw a beer bottle at the shelter on Broadway on Saturday.
Cambridgeshire Police said Ivans Karanovs, 20, will appear in court in Peterborough on Monday.
A spokesman said he was charged with criminal damage, using threatening words and behaviour and common assault.

Arrests after BNP attend protests

A man has been arrested and charged with a breach of the peace following a rally in Dalkeith, Midlothian, attended by BNP leader Nick Griffin.
About 30 protesters gathered objecting to the BNP's presence at the demonstration, organised by local residents demanding the rehousing of convicted rapist Robert Greens.
Meanwhile six people were detained for public order offences in Glasgow.
The arrests were made at an "Alliance of Nationalists" rally.

Olympic organisers are investigating why many seats were empty during events at venues including the Aquatic Centre in east London.
The BBC's Nick Hope said areas high in the stands at the sold-out event were full but several hundred more expensive seats lower down were not filled.

On March 2nd, 2012, Somali pirates hijacked a Nigeria-bound vessel, MT Royal Grace, off the Gulf of Eden. The vessel’s 22 crew members have been held hostage ever since.
“It seems the Jonathan administration has abandoned my son and other Nigerian citizens in the hands of pirates in a lawless, no man’s land,” said the father of one of the hijacked crew members. He added that the hijacked crew members were being kept in Puntland, a breakaway section of Somalia.

The funeral of Christopher Brahney, whose body was found in a canal after he went missing from a Stone Roses concert in Manchester, has taken place.
The 22-year-old's body was found in the Manchester Ship Canal at Salford Quays, 10 days after he disappeared following the band's gig at Heaton Park.
Family and friends attended the funeral at Sale's St Anne's Church in Trafford.

Yet, for some reason, folks have a problem with Pastors that live these fabulous lives. For one, they were ordained by God. So if you have a problem with that you need to take that up with Jesus. Secondly, they didn’t make this money themselves. The congregation GIVES him the money. So what is this Pastor to do with all this money after he’s already supplied you with the huge mega church, the church gym, the church swimming pool, the church day car center, the church bus, the STAFF, and the private jet that he needs to fly all over the world to preach the word to all the other lost souls? Is he not supposed to enjoy your pay check? Again, you should take that up with Jesus. Pastor Joel Olsten said in an interview with Oprah “God wants you to be rich.†And if you’d seen the size of the house he lived in, you’d believe him.
